Back in 2004, after graduating from a small private college with a Bachelor of Arts, I spent a month in Hong Kong, living with my brother and his family who were ex-pats there for six years. This was my first trip to Asia and I was surprised to find that Hong Kong was so much like New York City that I felt quite comfortable! I did all the local tourist things (ferry to Kowloon, Victoria Peak, Stanley Market) plus some things that only those who live there would know (hiking trails, nightclub spots, great little restaurants, church services, HK International school, etc.). We went to Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia for a week where I experienced the most foreign environment I had yet been in. It was there that I learned that I had been given a teaching assistant position at Iowa State University for the fall. At 49 years of age, I began work on an MA in TESL/Applied Linguistics while learning to teach for the first time. Whew! What a year of changes 2004 was for me!

Hi Lynn,

I enjoyed reading about your year of exciting places and changes. I hope to visit the Asian places you mention some day and experience "most foreign environments".

And good luck with your studies!
